Marsha Chandler is a consultant with Education Executives, LLC.
Marsha Chandler has more than 30 years’ experience as an academic and as a successful academic administrator. After her tenure (2007-2015) as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, she commenced consulting for university deans, provosts, and presidents. She has worked with academic leaders at a wide number of institutions, including but not limited to the University of Texas at Austin, Emory, Lurie Children’s Hospital (Chicago), Johns Hopkins, Lehigh, University of British Columbia, and UC San Diego. Her consulting activities focus on strategic planning, innovation, problem solving and conflict resolution, fundraising, and diversity and inclusion.
During her tenure from 2007-2015 as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, she was responsible for all fiscal matters and the total range of the Salk’s other support functions, including scientific services, core research facilities, tech transfer, human resources, development and communication, legal affairs, and public education.
Prior to her role at the Salk, Marsha served as the Executive Vice Chancellor (Chief Academic Officer) at UC San Diego from 1997-2007. She played a critical role in leading the planning implementation for the extensive growth of the campus from 16,000 to 24,000 students, and the creation of two new professional schools – the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science and the School of Management.
Before being recruited to UC San Diego, Marsha was Dean of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto from 1990-1997.
In addition to her academic career, Marsha has served on the Board of Biocept, a commercial stage oncology diagnostics company, the Corporate Directors Forum, which enables directors through continuing education, up to date issue analysis, and peer networking to achieve success for the benefit of their stake holders, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, and the Arts and Humanities Advisory Council at UCSD. Her past board service includes service on the Board of the American University in Paris, Rady Children’s Hospital, Fulbright Foundation for Educational Exchange, the Mingei Museum, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, and the San Diego Opera.
Marsha is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She received her BA in political science from CCNY and her PhD in public policy and political science from UNC-Chapel Hill. She was awarded an honorary degree, a Doctor of Law from the University of Toronto. Marsha completed the certificate Advanced Management Program AMP at the School of Business, Harvard University. She was also a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Public Leadership at the JFK School at Harvard and a Visiting Professor at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard.
Marsha and her husband William Chandler, a professor at UCSD, reside in La Jolla, CA.
